FAQs

When should I replace my helmet?
One crash and it's trash. You must replace the helmet after any crash where your head hits. EPS foam is made for one impact only - no matter what you paid for it! One crash and it's trash is the Helmets R Us rule. Plastic shells can hide the foam damage. Why take a chance - replace your helmet.

How long are helmets supposed to last?
It may be prudent to replace your helmet within 5-10 years of purchase, a decision that can be based, at least in part, on how much the helmet was used, how it was cared for, and where it was stored. Cracks in the shell or liner, a loose shell, marks on the liner, fading of the shell, evidence of crushed foam in the liner, worn straps, and missing pads or other parts, are all reasons to replace a helmet. Regular replacement may minimize any reduced effectiveness that could result from degradation of materials over time, and allow you to take advantage of recent advances in helmet protection. Why are helmets so inexpensive?
Wrong Question - What you should be asking is why are the "other" helmets so expensive? Helmets R Us doesn't have fancy offices, big advertising budgets, or high overhead, so we can afford to provide the HIGHEST standard and quality helmets on the market today.

How long does it take to get our order?
Helmets R Us is the only company that guarantees your order will ship within 24-48 hours of receipt - and in most instances we ship your order the very same day you send it to us. We are real movers and shakers here - we know that the faster you get your order the safer everyone is. Helmets R Us really does care and we want to make a difference.

CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
This is the Governments Standard that all bicycle helmets must meet. It has been a U.S. Law since March 10, 1999. The standards, studies and regulations are available online at http://www.cpsc.gov/.

What is the difference between a standard bicycle helmet and a multi-sport helmet?
This is a “murky area” within the industry. Here’s our personal take on it. The standards between these two helmets are the same. The standard style bicycle helmet is primarily used when riding bicycles and tricycles. The multi-sport helmet is used in several activities such as in-line skating, skateboarding and bike riding. The general perception is that the multi-sport helmet can withstand multiple impacts—which is INCORRECT. All helmets are SINGLE impact helmets. When you crash and hit a hard surface, the EPS (fancy word for Styrofoam) part of the helmet crushes and absorbs the impact - both styles of helmets have this component. The multi-sport helmet also has a heavy ABS Impact Dispersing Outer Shell. Standard bicycle helmets have a thin plastic micro-shell.

In our humble opinion though - the most important factor is that the helmet is worn. Children tend to wear a helmet that they feel is more stylish. In that department we find the multi-sport appeals to the older “tweens” and “teenagers”. For very small children, we recommend using a toddler helmet that has extended coverage on the sides and back of the helmet. For infants we recommend that you contact your pediatrician prior to putting a helmet or an infant on a bicycle.

What ages do each helmet size fit?
A helmet fits your head, not your birth date. Generally we can’t unequivocally associate a specific size with an age. And “One Size” DOES NOT fit all!! For the most accurate fit you must measure the head. Take that measurement and apply it to our sizing chart. Once you have the size picked out, then determine what helmet best fits your need.
